The History of Preeti Layout: Nepal's Touch-Typing Pioneer

📅 Published: 2026-07-31 ✍️ Author: NepaliTools Editorial

The Birth of Devanagari Desktop Publishing

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, desktop publishing was starting to grow in Nepal. Since early computer systems only supported the Latin alphabet, local designers mapped Devanagari letters to QWERTY keys. The resulting Preeti layout became the gold standard for Nepali printing.

Transitioning to the Web

While the Preeti layout defined early print media, the rise of the web necessitated standard encoding. Today, editors use a Preeti to Unicode Converter to share historical documents online, making them readable on modern mobile phones and searchable on Google.
