History of Nepali Fonts: From Typewriters to System Unicode

📅 Published: 2026-07-06 ✍️ Author: Rajesh Tarar (Devanagari Localization Specialist)

Early Devanagari Typewriters

The history of Nepali typing began with mechanical typewriters layout setups. In the late 20th century, digital type designers created typefaces like Preeti, Kantipur, Sagarmatha, and PCS Himali to bring Devanagari to early computing.

The Modern Era

With the release of standard Devanagari UTF-8 support by the Unicode Consortium, Nepal began transitioning away from legacy layouts. Today, standard Unicode is the default for government portals, news sites, and social media platforms.
